Economy and Job Creation
The economy is the most important challenge facing us today. Unemployment is up and record numbers of working families are losing their homes. In addition, millions of Americans have lost much of their life savings. Retirement accounts that Americans count on to retire when they are ready have been dramatically affected by the downward spiral of the economy. People are hurting. Mike Prendergast understands that to create jobs and develop our economy we must reduce burdensome regulations and lower tax rates for all Americans.
Tax Reform
Our tax system is in dire need of reform, and Americans deserve a fairer tax system. Today’s tax code is so complex that many Americans cannot even file their own taxes and must go to an accountant. In fact, our nation spends 5.4 billion hours a year – as many hours as the entire population of Indiana works – filling out tax forms. Mike Prendergast will fight for a simpler and fairer tax system.
Immigration and Border Security
Legal immigrants have made many positive contributions to our nation in terms of economic growth and cultural heritage. However, while we have benefited greatly from legal immigration, illegal immigration continues to put us all at risk. Gaining control over our borders means protecting the American dream for all our citizens and legal immigrants. There is a very real threat – not just posed by illegal aliens and drug smugglers, but by terrorists who target our very freedom. Safe communities begin with secure borders.
Budget Reform
Mike Prendergast will work to get American's "fiscal house" in order. He will work to balance the budget and support a line-item veto. Mike Prendergast will also fight against backroom deals and pork-barrel projects that waste taxpayers hard earned dollars.
Education
Education is the ladder of opportunity for our children - and the key to keeping America first in the world. Our children are the future of our nation. It’s vital that they are prepared to continue where we leave off and are given every opportunity to succeed. Mike Prendergast believes that control of education must be taken away from Washington bureaucrats and returned to parents, teachers and local leaders. It just makes common sense to put our children's education in the hands of those who know their names and their needs. By investing in our children, we are building a brighter future for America.
Strengthening America's Military & Our Local Bases
As a soldier, Mike Prendergast understands that a strong military is essential for a strong America. Mike believes that the number one responsibility of the federal government is to protect American lives. The only way to keep America safe is to keep America strong. The cornerstone of an effective defense remains a strong, well-trained and well-equipped United States military. If America wishes to remain a superpower in the 21st century, we must invest the resources in our military.
